New York City Mayor Eric Adams has shifted policies regarding cooperation between local law enforcement and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). In April 2025, he signed an Executive Order allowing ICE to reestablish an office on Rikers Island to assist in criminal investigations, particularly targeting violent transnational gangs.
However, in June 2025, following public backlash, Adams reversed his stance, supporting a 20-year-old Venezuelan asylum seeker detained by ICE and filed a legal brief arguing that ICE's actions undermine the City’s sanctuary policies.
