Details:
Educational disparities between Black and White students in the U.S. persist across various metrics. For instance, in 2024, Illinois' fourth-grade math scores showed a 32-point gap between White and Black students, with averages of 248 and 214, respectively. Nationally, the 2020 SAT results revealed that only 44% of Black students met the college readiness benchmark in reading and writing, compared to 79% of White students. These gaps are influenced by factors such as socioeconomic status, access to quality education and systemic inequalities.

HBCU stands for Historically Black College or University. These are institutions of higher education established before 1964 with the primary mission of educating Black Americans. Despite being founded to serve Black students, most HBCUs are open to all ethnicities and backgrounds today.
